South Africa’s longest highway slices right through Beaufort West, a rural town with high rates of crime and unemployment.

Photographer Michael Subotzky was drawn to the town when he was driving along the highway and noticed a prison right in the middle of the towns traffic circle. Instead of driving through, he kept coming back.

See more images and read about the project on Subotzky’s site.
